Top 10 fitness apps for a healthier lifestyle

You've probably already read our post about the best running apps, and maybe even discovered one or two apps to make you happy, but what about apps designed to help you get fit fast and live a healthier lifestyle? With so many apps out there, it can seem like a minefield choosing the best one, and we're sure you don't want to pay £2.99 a time for an app that isn't right for you.

This week the Expertrain team have been working hard to come up with our definitive list of the top 10 fitness apps which we believe will help you live a healthier lifestyle. Of course, this is just our opinion, and we'd love to hear your feedback, so why not Tweet us and let us know which app is your fave, or tell us about an app you use regularly which didn't make our list? Shoes on, water bottle at the ready – the countdown starts here.

#2. Argus

This free pedometer app is pretty nifty – take it with you on the go and it will track how many steps you take throughout the day and work out how many calories you've burned.

Why we love it

A colourful, well-designed iOS app that lets you track your daily walking activity. Fairly intuitive to use, it also lets you add information about any workouts you've done – that dance class counts! Input what you've drunk during the day and it will even help you monitor your hydration levels; great if you're trying to drink more water.

#3. The Johnson & Johnson Official 7-Minute Workout App

It may have a long-winded title but this app is great if you're a fan of squeezing a quick body weight workout into your day; and we all need to spend at least 30 minutes being active everyday to stay fit and healthy. Tried our 15-minute workouts? Then get your hands on this app for a new fitness challenge.

Why we love it

This stylish app was featured in the New York Times and you won't need any equipment for these workouts – well, other than a wall and a chair. It's perfect for on-the-go fitness at work or on holiday. With 13 pre-designed workouts and 36 exercises, there's more than enough material here to keep you busy and you can customise your workout, choosing how many reps you want to complete and the length of your rest intervals. You can even add your own music from your library.

#4. Yoga Studio

Could this be the ultimate yoga app? We think so. It's beautifully designed and feature packed; great for an introduction to yoga if you're a beginner, for use in between yoga classes or as a stand-alone option.

Why we love it

The intuitive interface and colourful design makes navigation a pleasure and the app is designed to be used by beginners and experts alike. This app features 65 yoga and meditation classes with HD videos and a library with over 280 poses. So it's easy to try a different video each day and ensure you don't suffer from workout boredom. You can even get creative and design your own bespoke workout using the poses in the library. In total this app gives you over 16 hours of yoga classes sorted by duration and level, making it easy to customise your workout.

#5. MyFitnessPal

Ok, so it's not technically a fitness app, and we don't recommend obsessively counting calories if you're trying to lose weight, but we think that MyFitnessPal is one of the best ways to start a healthier eating plan.

Why we love it

You can add foods to track how many calories you have consumed; it's easy to use and takes just a few seconds to get started. With thousands of foods included in the database, it's one of the best calorie counting apps around; you can even add information on your daily workouts, such as that morning run or lunchtime yoga class, to show how many calories you've burned.

#6. Map My Ride

It's a bit like Map My Run, on two wheels! Cycling is a great way to get fit, get your endorphins flowing and boost your happiness, and now you can use your smartphone to track your progress.

Why we love it

It's easy to track your speed, route, distance, time and calories with this simple, stylish app. It provides audio alerts and updates you on your progress to keep you motivated; sort of like a substitute fitness buddy. It can also be used with a variety of sports watches and sensors and offers the ability to share your workouts on social media – why shouldn't you get to brag about your progress?

#7. Human

We know we should be moving for 30 minutes a day in order to stay healthy – this gets your heart rate pumping, blood and endorphins flowing and can improve your fitness. But it can sometimes be a challenge working out whether you've been active enough, and that's where this app comes in.

Why we love it

We're huge fans of Human's simple interface – it's bright, fun and a joy to use. Its a simple app that provides excellent results. Human tracks your movement, whether you're walking to work, running in the park or just meeting friends for an afternoon of shopping. Then it lets you know when you've completed 30 minutes of physical activity. We think this is a pretty cool, easy way to keep on top of how active you are; you might be surprised!

#8. The Walk – Fitness Tracker and Game

Fans of Zombies, Run! Will love this app. It's pretty cool, we have to admit. This week the Expertrain team have been testing it out – here's what we thought.

Why we love it

If you need a little extra motivation to start running or walking, and we're not talking about a sugary doughnut waiting for you when you get home, apps like The Walk are perfect. This app combines a fun storyline and game, and it's from the creators of Zombies, Run! Whilst at its heart it's a step counter/pedometer, it's so much more than just that. Choose an episode and follow the storyline until you reach your destination. If you're the kind of person who needs a reason or a destination to walk somewhere, this is it!

#9. 30 Day Fitness Challenge

If you're looking for motivation and a fitness challenge, without the need for a personal trainer, then this is the app for you.

Why we love it

It offers full workouts for your core, legs and arms – no gym needed! Each section presents you with 20 challenges created by fitness experts, lasting 30 days. With handy reminders to exercise, it's easy to fit these challenges (most of which just take a few minutes) into your day, no matter how busy and stressed you are.

#10. Gympact

We love this app – although it's a bit different from the others on our list. It might seem a little extreme, but it really does work!

Why we love it

Set yourself a target for the number of gym visits you plan to do a week and if you reach your target, you can earn some money! Of course, if you fail to reach your target, you'll be fined, so set your goals realistically if you don't want to be penalised. It's a great motivator to make the most of your gym membership but make sure you update your goals regularly.
