London's top food and fitness events for spring

Heading to London this spring and looking for a food or fitness event to keep you busy? The capital has loads to offer this April and May and it can be hard to know where to start. Luckily for you the Expertrain team have been working hard gathering together some of the best events to check out and here it is - our definitive list!

Our Favourite April Events

April has loads on offer, from food-related exhibitions to street food night markets and a bit of cycling and runnng, if you're looking to burn off those extra calories. Here's our pick of the best events happening in April:

Tweed Run

This 10 mile charity bike ride is the perfect way to get on your bike and burn off some extra calories whilst enjoying some beautiful London scenery! In aid of the London Cycling Campaign, the run, which takes place on Saturday 18th April, sees participants dressed to the nines in 1920s and 1930s cycling gear - if you don't fancy taking part then why not pack a picnic, don your finest clothes and come along to support your friends? Registration costs £25 if you do fancy pedalling your way to happiness, and the route takes in locations including Somerset House, Westminster Bridge and Borough Market, ending with a closing ceremony at Bloomsbury Ballrooms, with cocktails and live music!

London Marathon

Ok, so it's too late to sign up for this year's London Marathon, but you can head for the starting point in Greenwich to cheer on your friends and family who were lucky enough to gain a place! Whilst you're at it, why not enter the ballot for next year's run and check out our top tips on how to run a stress-free marathon? It's never to early to start training for your next fitness challenge...

Urban Food Fest

Fancy trying some international street food? Whether you're planning to treat yourself on cheat day or looking to inject some variety into your healthy eating - important if you want to stick to a diet - Urban Food Fest in Shoreditch is the perfect place to come. Running from now until December, this weekly night market takes place every Saturday at Euro Car Parks on Brick Lane, and you can try delights such as vegan hand-made pasta or Venezuelan beef arepa (flatbreads) loaded with protein - great after a session at the gym!

Cravings: Can your Food Control You?

The Science Museum is fun all year round, but some of their exhibitions are really fascinating. We'll be heading down to check out their latest offering, 'Cravings: Can your Food Control You?' which runs daily from 10am to 6pm - and entry is free! Offering plenty of food for thought and some cutting-edge scientific facts, the exhibition looks at the problem of obesity and how what we eat affects our brains, bodies and habits.

You probably already know that the key to controlling portion sizes is to eat from a smaller plate, but we bet you didn't know that eating food from a golden-plated spoon makes it seem thicker and sweeter! Expect to uncover this and more fascinating facts on everyhing from why diets don't work to using faeces as an obesity cure (it may seem out-there, but it's a procedure which has already been tested on mice!) and a digital quiz which will keep all ages entertained. Head down to the London Science Musceum in Kensington to see for yourself.

Our Favourite May Events

The sun will be shining (we hope), so what better time to get involved in some of the cool events happening in London this May? Take some time out from your busy job and workout schedule and check these out:

London Coffee Festival

Whether you're battling a serious morning coffee addiction or have successfully weaned yourself onto decaf - or maybe you're a tea addict, like many of us at Expertrain HW - the London Coffee Festival offers something for everyone! Running from 30th April to 3rd May at the Old Truman Brewery, it's an opportunity to explore the capital's vibrant cofee culture, try gourmet coffee and speciality tea, watch demos from renowned world-class baristas and head for informative seminars to educated yourself on all things tea-and-coffee-related. Coffee and tea are fine to drink, in moderation, and could actually be beneficial to health - just don't overdo it, as too much caffeine could leave you feeling jittery!

Electric Run

We bet you've never run a 5k quite like this before. A glow-in-the-dark 5k that is! Yeah, we're really up for running this! 15,000 participants will take to the streets of London on Saturday 2nd May, to walk, dance or run a cool, illuminated route across the city. It's not too late to register but 70% of tickets are already sold out, so you'd better move fast! Individuals can register online until 23rd April for £37.50 (or register from 23rd - 26th April for £40.50), or bring along your fitness buddies and friends and register a team of 4 or more for just £33 per person until 23rd April (£36 per person from 23rd to 26th April). With glowing neon trees, tunnels of light and fountains that change colour to match the music, this is one nocturnal 5k you won't forget in a hurry. The race starts at Wembley Park - we'll see you there!

Which events take your fancy? We'd love to hear from you if you check any of these out - so let us know in the comments or get in touch on Twitter!
