10 Wellness hacks to try today

Staying healthy isn't always easy, especially when we're all so busy. It would be nice to lead a clean-eating, raw food diet and spend every waking moment working out - but for most of us that just isn't possible. Because we're all about making it easier to make healthy changes in your life, we're here with some great wellness hacks that can be squeezed into even the busiest schedule. Sometimes it's the smallest changes which make the difference - so try our 10 wellness hacks today!

#1. Cut back on carbs the easy way

Restrictive diets really aren't our thing, and we believe in everything in moderation. But eating too many carbs can lead to bloating and weight gain - not to mention that mid-afternoon slump that hits after a carb-heavy lunch. You can cut back on carbs by eating open-faced sandwiches or going bun-less altogether - add your sandwich toppings to some salad leaves or quinoa for a healthier lunch. Making this small change will boost your energy levels and prevent you from eating too many calories!

#2. Go commando

We're not suggesting you do this all the time, but not wearing any underwear to bed is a great idea. This reduces bacteria growth which can lead to UTIs and bladder infections (1). Wearing underwear increases the moisture in this area, creating the ideal environment for yeast to grow.

#3. Do yoga

Even if you're not especially flexible, there's one yoga pose that anyone can do. The legs-up-on-the-wall pose relieves stress, can alleviate the symptoms of depression and anxiety, aids drainage, prevents leg cramps, regulates blood pressure and can relieve tired legs. It can even help to reduce the pain of menstrual cramps! The best bit? You can do this move lying down, on the phone to your friends!

#4. Stay pH balanced

Neutralising acid in the body helps to keep your system balanced. Drinking water with lemon juice in throughout the day helps to flush toxins from the system (2), thanks to the citric acid lemons contain. It can also aid digestion (3)! It's up to you whether you prefer chilled lemon water or hot water with a squeeze of lemon - add a little honey too for a delicious drink, if you like.

#5. Eat more fruit

Don't be tempted to avoid eating fruit and stick to juice and smoothies instead. When fruit is juice, the fibre from the pulp, juice and skin is extracted, so you're missing out on all that goodness - and you won't feel full either. Rather than spending money on juices from that trendy juice bar in your neighbourhood, buy some fruit instead - it's cheaper, healthier and will leave you feeling satisfied!

#6. Avoid junk food temptation

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for a reason - it kickstarts your metabolism and eating breakfast can leave you feeling satisfied until lunchtime, so you're more likely to make healthy food choices throughout the day. By filling up with a protein-rich breakfast, you're less likely to give into junk food temptation when somebody in your office arrives with a box of cakes or donuts! If you can't stomach a big breakfast, have something - a piece of fruit is a healthy choice that will start your day the right way.

#7. Take off your shoes

There's something to be said for taking off your shoes in the house. Not only is it hygienic (and polite - a must in many cultures), it can also help prevent the spread of harmful bacteria! A study carried out at the University of Arizona analysed germs found on footwear and found bacteria including E. coli, which can cause urinary tract and intestinal infections and meningitis, and Klebsiella pneumonia, which can cause pneumonia as well as bloodstream and wound infections. 

#8. Get lean by eating fat

You don't need to avoid fat if you don't want to get fat. It's all about eating the right type of fat - there are bad fats and good fats! Eating more good fats, such as monounsaturated fats found in olive oil, oily fish, avocados, nuts and coconut oil are essential for heart health and can help you to stay lean, fit and healthy. 

#9. HIIT the gym

#10. Grow your own

Growing your own produce is one of the best ways to get healthy. But you don't need a huge allotment to get started and one of the best ways to get into growing your own is to start with a small herb garden on your kitchen windowsill, to add flavour to your healthy cooking. From there you can experiment with growing vegetables such as peas, lettuce and more - a few pots, some compost and a little organic fertiliser and in no time at all you will be growing amazing produce that's pesticide free!
